Evaluation of Senior Citizens’ Licence Renewal Proposal
SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport will review a proposal that would make it mandatory for Malaysian drivers aged 65 and above to pass health and competency assessments before renewing their driving licences.
Minister Anthony Loke explained that while the proposal is being taken into account, further study and consideration are required before any decisions can be made.
“We must carefully examine the proposal report. We will not rush into any decisions,” Loke stated, addressing the press after chairing the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).
Addressing Questions on Senior Citizens’ Health and Competency Assessments
Loke responded to questions about the relevance of requiring senior citizens to undergo health and competency evaluations before renewing their licences.
Recent media reports highlighted concerns about the rising number of accidents involving elderly drivers, suggesting that additional conditions for licence renewal could help curb the issue.
One of the proposed changes is to require senior citizens to pass a health and competency assessment before they can renew their licences, as there is currently no upper age limit for driving in Malaysia.
Logistics Hub Site Selection in Negeri Sembilan
Separately, Loke revealed that Negeri Sembilan is being considered for the development of the country’s logistics hub, with a site in Nilai being identified for the project.
“The state government has been very supportive of this initiative and is in the process of locating appropriate land,” he said.
Additionally, Loke shared that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority had briefed the task force on new incentives to attract investment for the Smart Logistics Complex, including tax breaks of up to 70%, as part of Budget 2025. – Bernama
